How Two-Factor Authentication Works

Two-factor authentication (2FA) combines two elements to verify your identity:

  1. Something you know: Your password
  2. Something you have: A time-based code from Pro Authenticator

This dual-layer approach means that even if someone steals your password, they cannot access your account without the temporary code from your authenticator.

Getting Started with Pro Authenticator

Step 1: Enable 2FA on Your Account

Navigate to the Security or Privacy Settings of the service you want to protect (e.g., Gmail, Facebook, Dropbox).

Step 2: Choose Authenticator App Option

Select “Authenticator App,” “Authentication App,” or similar option when prompted for your preferred 2FA method.

Step 3: Get Your QR Code or Secret Key

The service will display:

  • A QR code: You can take a screenshot or save this image.
  • A text-based Secret Key: You can copy this key.

Step 4: Add Account to Pro Authenticator

Click the “Add Account” button in Pro Authenticator. A form will appear.

Step 5: Add Your Account Details (Two Easy Ways)

You now have two options to add your account:

Option A: Scan QR Code Image (Recommended)

  1. Click the “Scan QR Code Image” button.
  2. Select the QR code image you saved in the previous step.
  3. The Issuer, Label, and Secret Key fields will be filled in for you automatically.

Option B: Manual Entry If you prefer to enter the details manually:

  • Issuer: Enter the service name (e.g., Google, Facebook).
  • Label: Add your username or email for easy identification.
  • Secret Key: Paste the Secret Key you copied earlier.

Step 6: Save and Start Using

Click “Save” to complete the setup. You’ll immediately see a 6-digit verification code that refreshes every 30 seconds.

Step 7: Verify the Setup

Return to your service’s 2FA setup page and enter the current code from Pro Authenticator to complete the activation.

Security Best Practices

Protect Your Secret Keys

Store a backup of your Secret Keys in a secure location separate from your password manager. If you lose access to Pro Authenticator, you’ll need these keys to regain account access.

Use Unique Passwords

Two-factor authentication is most effective when combined with strong, unique passwords for each account.

Enable Recovery Options

Always set up backup recovery methods (recovery codes, backup phone numbers) when enabling 2FA on important accounts.

Avoid Public Devices

Don’t add accounts to Pro Authenticator on shared or public computers. If you must, remember to clear browser data afterward.

Regular Backups

Periodically export your account data and store it securely. Browser data can be lost if you clear your cache or reinstall your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is Pro Authenticator really free?

Yes, completely free. The first 4 accounts require no information whatsoever. For unlimited accounts, we only ask for basic contact information—no payment required.

Q: What happens if I clear my browser data?

Clearing browser storage will delete your Pro Authenticator accounts. Always keep a backup of your Secret Keys in a secure location.

Q: Can I use Pro Authenticator on multiple devices?

You’ll need to add accounts separately on each device. The Secret Key remains the same, so you can use it to set up Pro Authenticator on any device.

Q: How is this different from Google Authenticator?

Both use the same TOTP standard. Pro Authenticator offers the convenience of browser-based access without requiring app installation. Key features include cloud-free operation for maximum privacy, instant cross-platform availability, and the unique ability to add accounts by simply uploading a QR code image—no phone camera needed.

Q: What if I lose my device?

If you have your Secret Keys backed up, you can set up Pro Authenticator on any new device. This is why keeping secure backups is crucial.

Q: Does Pro Authenticator work offline?

Yes. Once accounts are added, code generation happens locally and doesn’t require internet connectivity.

Q: Can I trust this service with my security?

Pro Authenticator uses industry-standard TOTP algorithms. Since all data stays in your browser and nothing is sent to our servers, you maintain complete control over your security.

Q: Which browsers are supported?

Pro Authenticator works with all modern browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, Opera, and Brave.
